A competent person has the knowledge, training and practical experience needed to safely test and inspect inflatable play equipment, such as bouncy castles, against the relevant requirements of BS EN 14960-1.

Theory alone is not enough. They also need hands-on experience with inflatable equipment and the ability to recognise defects, carry out appropriate tests and interpret the results.

Inspector assessments and registration schemes help provide evidence of competence. RPII, PIPA and ADIPS have different roles in inspector assessment and inflatable inspection.

What Does a Competent Inflatable Inspector Check?

A competent person carries out a thorough annual inspection of the inflatable and its associated equipment. This includes checking the structure, anchor points, seams, internal air pressure and blowers for defects that could affect safe operation.

They assess the equipment against the relevant requirements of BS EN 14960 and the manufacturer’s instructions. New equipment requires an initial test, while repaired equipment may need further inspection or testing before returning to use.

Their role includes identifying worn fabric, damaged stitching, weakened anchor points, and other defects that could lead to an incident.
